ARI Grant Application Guidelines   PDF  Print  E-mail 

For Scholarship Applications: <$1501

  1. All applications must adopt the format outlined for Scholarship applications outlined in the document “ARI -Scholarship application.doc”
  2. All parts of the application must be completed.
  3. Scholarship applicants must be undertaking Projects where a genuine collaboration with a staff member of the Sydney Adventist Hospital or Avondale College is involved.
  4. There will be 2 dates per year for submission of applications.  The 2 closing dates will be the last Friday in May and November.
  5. At the June and December meetings, projects will be considered by the Research Advisory Committee.  Applicants recommended for funding according to merit will be invited for interview by the ARI Executive.
  6. Applicants will be advised of the success of the application within 14 days of the interview.
  7. Projects that will involve the patients and facilities of Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH) must have been approval from the SAH Human Ethics Committee before funds will be released.
  8. Where patients of Sydney Adventist Hospital (and other hospitals) are to be involved, a copy of the proposed patient information sheet and consent form must be included within the application. 
  9. An electronic copy of the application should be submitted to: The Executive Officer, r.grant@sah.org.au
  10. Submission of an application implies that the applicant authorises The Australasian Research Institute to make any inquiries it considers necessary in relation to the proposed research project.
  11. The decisions of The Australasian Research Institute are final.
  12. The Australasian Research Institute must be advised, in writing, of any proposed amendments to an approved project.

For Small Grant Application: <$5001

  1. All applications must adopt the format outlined for small grant applications outlined in the document “ARI -Small Grant application.doc”
  2. All parts of the application must be completed.
  3. Projects will be considered only if the work is being undertaken by or in collaboration with staff of the Sydney Adventist Hospital or Avondale College.   Hospital or Avondale researchers should
  4. have a genuine commitment to the project and play an active role in its execution. Collaboration with outside bodies is encouraged.
  5. Projects from novice researchers or visiting Fellows or Specialists to the hospital is encouraged.  Assistance with writing protocols will be provided to researchers in this category. (Contact Dr Ross Grant ARI Executive Officer, in the first instance).

  8. The Institute will consider applications for projects of up to a maximum of $5000 only.  These will generally include developmental studies (eg. small pilot studies or tests of intervention therapies and measurement instruments) that have yet to be fully developed.
  9. Projects that will involve the patients and facilities of Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH) must have been approval from the SAH Human Ethics Committee before funds will be released.
  10. Where patients of Sydney Adventist Hospital (and other hospitals) are to be involved, a copy of the proposed patient information sheet and consent form must be included within the application.

For Full Grant Application: $5001-$30000

  1. The document “ARI – Grant application.doc” is to be used as an expanding template for all Australasian Research Institute research grant applications.  In order to know where to type, ensure that ‘show all non-printing characters’ is in use. 
  2. All parts of the application must be completed.
  3. Projects will be considered only if the work is being undertaken by or in collaboration with staff of The Sydney Adventist Hospital or Avondale College who should have a genuine commitment to the project and play an active role in its execution. Collaboration with outside bodies are encouraged.
  4. The project should identify how the project, or extension of the project, will benefit humanity.  If the project is basic medical research, indications of how the knowledge gained, may be applied to clinical practice in the future, should be stated. For projects other than medical/clinical studies it must be outlined how the knowledge gained may benefit humanity.
  5. Projects from novice researchers or visiting Fellows or Specialists to the hospital is encouraged.  Assistance with writing protocols will be provided to researchers in this category. (Contact Dr Ross Grant ARI Executive Officer, in the first instance)
  6. There will be two dates per year for submission of full applications.  The 2 closing dates will be the last Friday in May and November.

At the June and December meetings, projects will be considered by the Research Advisory Committee in conjunction with external assessors reports.  Projects recommended for funding will then be ranked according to merit.  This list will be submitted to the ARI management committee who will determine the cut-off in relation to the available funds.  As stated in Item 5, projects by novice or visiting Fellows or Specialists will be considered in a different category, and ranked separately.  Commencement of funding for new projects will be within 3 months of each funding round each year.
  8. The Institute will consider applications for projects of up to a maximum of three years duration that have annual budgets of $5001 to $30,000.
  9. Projects that will involve the patients and facilities of Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH) must have been submitted for approval to the SAH Human Ethics Committee before funds will be released.
  10. Where patients of Sydney Adventist Hospital (and other hospitals) are to be involved, a copy of the proposed patient information sheet and consent form must be included within the application. 
  11. An electronic copy of the application should be submitted to: The Executive Officer, r.grant@sah.org.au

Use the following numbers (1-9) to indicate at Item 6 (Research Code) on the Grant Application the Research Programme into which your project most closely fits.

CHECKLIST – FULL GRANT APPLICATION

Your Research Grant Application should consist of:

One original and 10 copies (all on paper) from template “ARI - Full Grant application.doc”.

With attachments:

  1. Nomination of Potential Assessors form (at end of “ARI - Full Grant application.doc” file).
  2. Proposed patient information sheet and consent form (if applicable).
  3. Ethics approval letter (if applicable)
